What you can see and do on the Big Island in a day depends on where you are at the start of your trip. We’ve put together itineraries for several day trips that you can start after breakfast and be home in time for dinner (or dine out along the way).

Like any good tour guide we’ll suggest things to see and places to stop along the way, including great places for a casual lunch. The difference is that these suggestions come from long-time Big Island residents and are updated frequently.

Things change from time to time, so we welcome your comments and suggestions about our itineraries. Email us at theorchidisle@aol.com

Places to Go. Things to See.

A Refresher Course

Before you traipse out and about, remember these tips:

Comfort

The weather on The Big Island is changeable. Carry a lightweight waterproof jacket in your lightweight day-pack.

Nourishment

Sightseeing can be fatiguing. Take along a cooler filled with cold liquid refreshments. Bring along some snacks as well to keep up your energy levels.

Sun Protection

Wear sunscreen (factor 45 or 50 is appropriate for most activities) and protective headgear whenever you are day tripping. Be sure to sunscreen the tops of your feet If you are wearing sandals, as well as the tops of your ears. And refresh your sunscreen throughout the day.

Safety and Security

Petty theft is common in any resort area and rental cars are ripe targets for thieves. Don’t leave anything in your car that you cannot afford to lose.

Emergency road service Your car rental company may provide emergency road service as part of your contract. Inquire when renting a vehicle. The phone number for AAA emergency road service is 1-800-AAA-HELP.
